Adenosine

Adenosine (6-amino-9-beta-D-ribofuranosyl-9-H-purine) is a naturally occurring nucleoside (comprised of adenine bound to ribose sugar molecule via a beta-N9-glycosidic bond). Adenosine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter which exerts an anticonvulsant effect on the A1 adenosine receptors through modulating ionic currents postsynaptically and reducing excitatory neurotransmitter release presynaptically. The function of adenosine is primarily for cytoprotection and for preventing tissue damage in response to stress or injury. In its Phosphorylated forms, adenosine, involved in cellular energy transfer, signal transduction and the synthesis of RNA.
