Paclitaxel

Paclitaxel (taxol) is a plant alkaloid, a taxane and a antimicrotubule agent extracted from the Pacific yew tree Taxus brevifolia with antineoplastic activity. Paclitaxel inhibits the disassembly of microtubules via binding to tubulin, which results in inhibition of the cell division. It also induces apoptosis by binding to and blocking the function of the apoptosis inhibitor protein Bcl-2 (B-cell Leukemia 2). It is also used for treatment of breast, ovarian, lung, bladder, prostate, melanoma, esophageal, as well as other types of solid tumor cancers.
