Streptozotocin (STZ) also known as streptozocin, derived from Streptomyces achromogenes, is a naturally occurring antineoplastic antibiotic and has the similar mechanism of action with nitrosoureas. It is an anticancer agent approved by US FDA in 1982 to use for the treatment of metastatic cancers of pancreatic islet of langerhans. Streptozotocin induces cell death in both bacteria and mammalian cells via inhibition of DNA synthesis by alkylation and cross-linking the strands of DNA; it is also affecting different stages of cell cycle in mammalian. STZ shows bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria.
