Albumin is the most abundant protein of the serum (about 60% of the total protein content of plasma). which regulates the osmotic pressure and pH of blood, and transports a wide variety of
endogenous and exogenous compounds such as fatty acids, metal, amino acids, steroids and drugs.
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) also referred as Fraction V (as it has been originally found in the fifth ethanol fraction using Cohn′s cold ethanol precipitation method) is a Serum Albumin Protein derived from bovine serum with a molecular weight of 66.4kDa. It is a water-soluble protein which consists of 583 amino acids. It consists of three homologous domains which have been formed by six α-helices.
Fraction V is originated from the cold ethanol precipitation method used by Cohn to fractionate serum proteins. Serum albumin was found in the fifth ethanol fraction using Cohn′s method. Later on, some people used this term "Fraction V" to refer to serum albumin regardless of the method of preparation. Others have used this term to describe serum albumin purified by ethanol fractionation methods, it worth noting however, cold ethanol precipitation method has been highly modified since the original Cohn method. Different methods are used to purify serum including Cohn fractionation method, modified ethanol fractionation methods, heat shock and chromatography.
BSA is widely used in various applications including immunology, biochemistry, and biotechnology and molecular biology. ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), immunoblots (Western blot and
dot blot), and immunocytochemistry (immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence microscopy) are the most common applications for BSA in immunology. In cell and microbial culture, BSA used as a
nutrient. In molecular biology, BSA is used as a stabilizer of some of restriction enzymes during digestion of DNA. It also prevents adhesion of the enzyme to reaction tubes, pipet tips, and
other vessels. It is also widely used for quantitation of proteins amount in assays such as the Bradford Protein Assay.
Due to its lack of effect on other proteins, BSA is considered as a universal blocking reagent in many applications. It’s low cost, beside its stability to increase signal in assays and also its lack of interfere with other biochemical and biological reaction make the BSA a popular reagent for many biological studies and applications.
BSA variations and grades
ZELLX® is providing the BSA with the US origin and in different grades and with different purification methods to cover the full range of applications:
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Fatty Acid Free
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Fatty Acid Free is suitable for Westerns, enzyme systems, protein standards, hybridizations as well as fatty acid sensitive cell culture system. It is also widely used in the sensitive diagnostic and research applications.
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Molecular Biology Grade
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Molecular Biology Grade is nucleases and proteases free and can be used for a wide number of molecular biology applications. With high purity, this BSA is an ideal option to be used in Western Blotting, electrophoresis, ELISA, and cell culture media.
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Protease Free
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Protease Free has been checked for Enzymatic activity and can be used for a wide number of molecular biology and biotechnology
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Standard Grade
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Standard Grade is protease and nuclease free, while contains the natural fatty acids present in the serum, which is beneficial in the function of many cell types, such as sperm.
Bovine Serum Albumin, Acetylated
Bovine Serum Albumin, Acetylated has been nucleases inactivated by acetylation and is suitable for blocking Southern blots. Acetylated BSA should not be used as a protein standard in protein determinations assays like Bradford and Lowery assays, since acetylation of tyrosine residues prevents color development.
Bovine Serum Albumin, Heat Shock Fraction
- Diagnostic Grade
Bovine Serum Albumin, - Diagnostic Grade has been made by heat shock treatment and is IgG, protease and endotoxin free. With the high purity level, it can be used for highly sensitive application.
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Low Endotoxin Level
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Low Endotoxin Level contains less than 0.5 EU/mg endotoxin; it is protease, IgG and non-esterified fatty acids free and is ideal option for most cell culture applications and assays that require low endotoxin levels.
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Low Immunoglobulin Level
Bovine Serum Albumin, Fraction V - Low Immunoglobulin Level is a highly purified (more than 98%), lyophilized powder and can be used as a blocking reagent in EIA, RIA and ELISA systems, where IgG can interfere with the application.
Bovine Serum Albumin - Lipid-Rich for Cell Culture
Bovine Serum Albumin - Lipid-Rich for Cell Culture is an ideal option for cell culture applications and can be used as replacement for sera and growth supplements.
Bovine Serum Albumin - Biotechnology grade (Nuclease-free)
Bovine Serum Albumin - Biotechnology grade (Nuclease-free) has been prepared by Cold Alcohol Isolation method and is DNase/RNase free. With more than 99% purity,
this BSA can be used for a wide number of molecular biology and biotechnology applications.
