Diethyl pyrocarbonate (DEPC)

Diethyl Pyrocarbonate (DEPC) also known as diethyl dicarbonate is a chemical compound used to inactivate RNase and DNase enzymes via modification of Histidin residues in proteins to N-carbethoxy histidin and is sensitive to moisture and pH. DEPC at 155°C decomposes to ethanol and carbon dioxide in aqueous solution. Ammonia also decomposes DEPC to urethane, which is known as a potential carcinogen.
